Baseball is a simple game with simple rules. You throw a ball, you catch a ball, and you hit a ball. However, baseball is much more than a game. For some, baseball is a hobby. For others, baseball is a pastime. And for the people who are lucky enough to play this game, it is a lifestyle. At Frank W. Cox High School, baseball is a culture.
I moved to Virginia Beach in the summer going in to my senior year. As a high school senior transferring into a new state, a new high school, and new program, I can honestly say that Cox Baseball was one of the most educational and influential experiences I have ever encountered. When I moved to Virginia Beach, I arrived with a baseball scholarship. I also felt that I arrived with an exceptional understanding of what it meant to work hard. However, what I did not have were friends or a team. I was welcomed with open arms by the players, the coaches, and the athletic department. In my short time at Cox High School, I was exposed to unquestionably the best high school facilities a player could ask for. This includes a coaching staff that, in my opinion, is the best in the state. I played baseball at three high schools and in three states: California, North Carolina and Virginia. This coaching staff (at Cox High School) is a blessing to the game. I was given the most individualized coaching from the time I arrived in August 2019 through to the day I left for college in August 2020.
Unfortunately, I never got the privilege to play a baseball game with the name "Falcons" across my chest. I did, however, gain: friends that I will hold close to my heart; coaches that will continue to guide me through my career; a greater understanding of what it means to "trust the process;" a greater appreciation for this beautiful game; and a realization that at some point I will not be fortunate enough to pay anymore.
Through a devastating pandemic that resulted in a premature ending to a championship caliber team, I learned to never take a moment for granted because eventually the game will be over in my life. Looking back on my time at Cox, I can honestly say that any player to come through here will exit as a better student, a harder worker, and a better person. I can say these things because in my 9 months at Cox High School they were true for me. I could not possibly imagine what it must be like to spend 4 years in this elite program. All I can say is that any player who walks into Tilley Field as a Falcon baseball player, can consider themselves a lucky man.
I am one of the lucky few. Josh Grosz Cox Falcon 2020 East Carolina University 2024
